Plant Specialist

As the Plant Specialist it is your job to oversee the growth and harvest of new varieties of vegetables, fruits, and other crops in our hydroponic growing system. Your primary focus will be experimentation with the growing parameters with the goal of improving the process. The Plant Specialist will individually lead his/her own projects while effectively reporting progress to the rest of the team. This is a full time position working out of Ottawa.


What You'll Do  

  • Experiment with growing parameters in a scaled-down hydroponic growing system to improve crop variety, storing, and processing methods
  • Analyze agricultural data and prepare research reports
  • Act as the liaison with researchers, government departments, and business managers
  • Maintain records of service provided and their results
  • Identify funding opportunities for the development and implementation of research ideas
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, including food safety regulations
  • Conduct research and implement new technology in the field of hydroponic and sustainable farming


What You Have   

  • University degree in agriculture, horticulture, botany or related fields
  • Knowledge & experience with hydroponic technology, and preferably, controlled agriculture systems
  • Ability to work independently and manage own priorities
  • Ability to plan ahead, trouble-shoot, anticipate problems
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to preform manual labour tasks relevant to growing in small scale hydroponic growing system


Bonus Points   

  • Work experience in plant growth and development, plant nutrition, plant science, horticulture and/or gardening
  • Interest in food security and sustainable farming
  • Understanding of nutrition in northern Indigenous communities
